One of my ultimate favorite books is An Old-Fashioned Girl by Louisa May Alcott. It is about this country girl, Polly, who lives with a city friend, Fanny, (who is also a few years older than her) and her family. It is a very different lifestyle for Polly and is challenging for her to get used to. But Polly has a sweet disposition and brings a lot of goodness to Fanny’s home. Polly is a great example of being steadfast and immovable despite her surroundings.
I think this was one of my favorite books is because I can relate to Polly. I often felt as she did in being “old-fashioned” in standards while the world progressed in artificial beauties. I really connected with Polly and wished I could be more like her. She motivated me to stand up for what is right. I was able to see how being that type of person could bring good into the world.
My husband and I have been reading a favorite book from my childhood together. The Alliance by Gerald Lund takes place in the future after the end of the world. This group of people survived and learned how to farm. They become captured by “The Alliance of Four Cities” and are “implanted” or have computer chips placed in their brains that make it impossible for them to think or do anything negative. Eric, one of the farmers, understands the evilness of taking away people’s agency, so he beats all odds and overthrows the entire system. He frees all the people and everyone lives happily ever after because they are free to make their own choices (even if that does mean sad times come).
I really enjoy this book because I feel it is good paced, exciting, keeps you thinking and anticipating what is going to happen, and teaches good moral lessons. It really motivates me to stand up for what is right because, really, nothing is impossible.
I love Louisa May Alcott! I don't know why I have never heard of this book before. Sounds like a good one. Definitely adding it to my book list!
